Understand Your Pet Insurance Coverage

Pet insurance with Spot plans is simple and straightforward. We help make it easy, providing clear information up front so there are less unexpected surprises. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your pet’s health is our priority.

What is the waiting period?

Waiting periods begin the day after you purchase your policy and last until your coverage's effective date. Typically, any illness, disease, injury, or change to your pet's health that first occurs or shows symptoms before coverage is effective is considered pre-existing and is not eligible for coverage. Get a quote to learn more about waiting periods in your state.

Which vets can I use?

With a Spot plan you can take your pet to any vet in the U.S. or Canada, including specialists and emergency clinics. Spot plans do not use networks, giving pet parents the freedom to select the best clinic for their pet. Spot offers comprehensive coverage options for unexpected accidents and illnesses. You can also add-on Platinum preventive for coverage on eligible spaying or neutering costs

Preventive Care

Coverage for our optional preventive care add-ons begins just 24 hours after purchase, allowing you to use your preventive benefits almost immediately. These add-ons help cover routine check-ups, dental cleanings, and vaccinations, helping your pet get essential care. Spot's approach prioritizes immediate access to care, reflecting our commitment to your pet's well-being.

Submitting claims is easy

Once you visit your vet, submit a claim via our app or through the member center. Make sure you include any necessary documentation. Most claims are processed in less than 3 days, and reimbursements will be paid either via direct deposit or a check, whichever you prefer. Our helpful customer service representatives are available to answer any questions you may have.

What Does Pet Insurance Not Cover?

Pet insurance plays a vital role in helping safeguard your pet's health, covering a spectrum of unexpected accidents and illnesses. But most pet insurance plans do not cover the following:

  1. Pre-existing Conditions

  2. Grooming

  3. Funeral Costs

Spot plans can cover curable pre-existing conditions that have been symptom-free and without treatment for six months, though knee and ligament conditions are exclusions.

Help Protect Your Dog or Cat with Pet Insurance

Unexpected accidents and illnesses can happen at any time, but with Spot Pet Insurance plans, you can help ensure your pet receives the best care without financial stress. Spot helps make it easy to get affordable and comprehensive coverage options, with the freedom to visit any vet in the U.S. or Canada. Our plans offer optional coverage options for routine preventive care, including wellness exams, dental cleaning, and vaccinations. Plus, submitting a claim is quick and straightforward. Spot also offers a multi-pet discount of 10% on two or more pets and we cover things others don't like cataract care, spaying or neutering, and more. It's no wonder Spot is America's most popular pet insurance.

Will Pet Insurance Cover Cataracts?

Spot pet insurance plans can be a lifesaver when it comes to covering the eligible costs of cataract treatment for your pet. If the cataracts are not a pre-existing condition, and the waiting period for the policy has passed, many accident & illness pet insurance policies can help alleviate the financial burden of the surgical intervention needed to treat cataracts.

Are There Multi-Pet Discounts?

Spot offers a multi-pet discount of 10% on each additional pet after the first. Multi-pet discounts are meant to help make pet insurance more affordable for pet parents with multiple pets. With discounted rates, multiple coverage options, and the ability to insure multiple pets, it can be a smart choice for pet parents to get pet insurance.

Will Pet Insurance Cover Neutering and Spaying?

Spot pet insurance plans offer a Platinum add-on for an extra cost for spaying and neutering coverage. It's important to note that many dog insurance and cat insurance policies have waiting periods before coverage begins, which can range from a few days to several weeks. With Spot’s preventive plan options, there are no waiting periods applicable. Compare top pet insurance providers here.

Pet Insurance Plans with Emergency Coverage

At Spot Pet Insurance, we know that emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Whether it's a sudden illness, an accidental injury, or your pet ingesting something harmful, these situations can be stressful and costly. Our pet emergency insurance is designed to help give you peace of mind, covering unexpected eligible veterinary bills so you can focus on getting your furry friend the care they need.

What is Accident Coverage for Pets?

If there is one thing that someone is thinking of when it comes to dog health insurance and cat health insurance, it is protection against unexpected accidents. Whether it's a playful romp gone awry or a mischievous exploration leading to trouble, dogs and cats can find themselves in unexpected situations. For dogs, common accidents may include fractures from falls or collisions, ingestions of harmful substances, and lacerations from sharp objects. Cats, on the other hand, may experience injuries from high jumps or encounters with other animals, as well as ingestions of toxic plants or objects. Pet accident insurance can help cover the eligible costs incurred at a veterinary office due to unexpected accidents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pet Insurance More Expensive for Certain Breeds?

Pet insurance premiums can vary based on several factors; the pet’s age, breed, location, as well as the coverage selected for your plan, and your chosen deductible and annual limit.

Insurance providers take breed into account because different breeds can be prone to different health conditions.

Premiums may also change if you have multiple pets, and are able to receive a multi-pet discount.

At What Age Can I Enroll My Puppy in a Spot Plan?

Spot can cover puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

Does Pet Insurance Cover End of Life Expenses?

When your pet’s end of life is caused by a covered condition, plans provided by Spot cover expenses for euthanasia, burial and cremation only. Plans provided by Spot do not cover funeral expenses, memorial items, urns, caskets, burial plots or burial plot maintenance fees.

What is a Pre-Existing Condition?

A pre-existing condition is any injury or illness which occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. A condition is considered pre-existing whether or not it’s been officially diagnosed or treated; all that matters is when it occurred or symptoms first displayed.

Plans provided by Spot do not cover pre-existing conditions. However, with pet insurance plans provided by Spot, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future if the condition is curable. An injury or illness that is curable, cured, and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
