Mini Goldendoodle Characteristics and Traits
Have you ever looked at a Golden Retriever and been like ‘Niceee, but can I please have it in a smaller size? And could you also please top it up with some more cuteness?’ If yes, then here’s what you asked for – Mini Goldendoodle.
A perfect mix of the Golden Retriever’s charm and the Poodle’s high IQ, all wrapped up in a compact, hypoallergenic package. It’s like the best of art and science came together and created this beautiful breed. And they did come together in the form of breeders as this was not a coincidence.
A recent addition to the designer dogs clan, Mini Goldendoodles are a cross between Miniature Poodles and Golden retrievers. They come with an average height of 13-20 inches, an average weight of 15-35 lbs., and an average lifespan of 10-15 years. They come with various coat color options including black, white, silver, brown, blue, red, parti, sable, cream, tan, apricot and merle. (1)
Traits
These dogs are loyal, outgoing, social and highly intelligent (don’t forget the good looks here). Here are some of the most prominent traits of a Mini Goldendoodle – (2)
Highly intelligent – They can easily be trained to perform tricks, play games and a lot of other things. Their intelligence is not limited to training though. They have a high social intelligence as well.
Playful – The mini size comes with mega energy. They love to play. Just look at their parents. Both of them are highly active dogs.
Therapy dogs – Their friendly, social and intelligent traits make them a great choice for therapy and service as well.
Gentle – Being an offspring of the Golden Retriever, these dogs are very gentle and always eager to please their humans. They could come with a touch of mischief from their Poodle genes though.
Vocal – High energy does come with loud barks at times. While all Mini Goldendoodles may not be loud, some tend to bark loudly when they are excited or happy (which is going to be their mood most of the time).
Common Health Conditions
Overall, they are a healthy breed, but they can be prone to certain medical conditions most commonly seen in their parents - Poodles and Golden Retrievers. Here are the two common illnesses in Mini Goldendoodles -
Hip Dysplasia
A genetic condition induced by deformity of the hip during the growth stage. It can also lead to a degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis. Common signs here include – (1)
Limping
Reluctance to jump or get up
Walking mainly on front legs
Loss of muscle in hind legs
Reluctance to play or walk
The average cost of surgery for hip dysplasia can range from $3,500 per hip to $7,000 depending on the dog's condition, size, age, overall health, etc. (4)
Von Willebrand's Disease
Von Willebrand’s Disease - a blood disorder that affects the clotting process. The signs here include – (1)
Nose bleeds
Bleeding gums
Bloody stool
Prolonged bleeding after surgery
Unfortunately, this condition has no cure. You can only manage it with treatment plans like suturing injuries, avoiding specific medications, and doing blood transfusion before surgery.
How Big Do Mini Goldendoodles Get?
The mini in Mini Goldendoodles is defined by a height of 14-17 inches at the withers. Standard Goldendoodles, on the other hand, stand tall at 20-14 inches of average height. As far as weight is concerned, you’ll have a Mini one weighing around 26-35 pounds as against the standard one weighing over 50 pounds.
What is a Mini Goldendoodle’s Coat Type?
These mini cuties come in different types of coats depending on their genetics. They can have a straight, curly, or wavy coat depending on their KRT71 gene. The coat length can also vary from short to long. (1)
Another noticeable feature here is the furnishings on the face. Some mini Goldendoodles will have furnishings while others have an open face that consists of shorter facial hair.
And if you’re wondering if all of them are hypoallergenic, then the answer is ‘no’. A Goldendoodle must inherit two furnishing genes to have a non-shedding coat. And because Golden Retrievers carry zero furnishing genes and Poodles carry two, all F1 Goldendoodles will inherit just one furnishing gene. However, some breeders have successfully created multi-generational mini Goldendoodles that are completely non-shedding irrespective of the coat type. (3)
Are Mini Goldendoodles Good With Kids?
Mini Goldendoodles are not just good but excellent with kids. They are patient and kind. Their playfulness, excitement and all the sweet-little energy will be loved by your kids.
Do Mini Goldendoodles Bark a lot?
Not a lot, but mini Goldendoodles do tend to be vocal in times of excitement and happiness. However, this trait may not be common to all of them as individual personalities can vary.
Can I Have One in my Apartment?
Yes, you surely can. These mini dogs make the perfectly sized dog breed for an apartment-style living. They do have high amounts of energy that need to be burnt. But they wouldn’t mind burning it inside the house with some toys.
Are They Hard to Potty Train?
With the intelligence levels like theirs, it shouldn’t be very difficult to potty train them. All you need is the right technique, patience and lots of love (and by love we mean treats).
Some Goldendoodle owners have successfully taught their dogs to ring a bell they hung next to the door when they need outside. A tip for you here is to set the water bowl right outside the main door of the house. A puppy will communicate with you when they are thirsty faster than they will tell you they have to go potty. You can put a water bowl inside once you’ve house-trained them or you will be making trips outside every couple of hours all day long.
Do Mini Goldendoodles Live Less Than Goldendoodles?
It is usually considered as a thumb rule that the smaller the dog, the longer will be their lifespan. The same goes for Goldendoodles and their mini counterparts.
The average lifespan of standard Goldendoodles is about 10-13 years, slightly lower than that of mini ones which is 10-15 years. Having said that, lifespan depends heavily on multiple factors like diet, lifestyle, training, exercise, health, etc.
