What Does Pet Insurance Not Cover?

Pet insurance plays a vital role in helping safeguard your pet's health, covering a spectrum of unexpected accidents and illnesses. But most pet insurance plans do not cover the following:

  1. Pre-existing Conditions

  2. Grooming

  3. Funeral Costs

Spot plans can cover curable pre-existing conditions that have been symptom-free and without treatment for six months, though knee and ligament conditions are exclusions.

Essential Tips for Savvy Pet Parents:

Consider these tips to enhance your experience with pet insurance

What is the waiting period?

Waiting periods begin the day after you purchase your policy and last until your coverage's effective date. Typically, any illness, disease, injury, or change to your pet's health that first occurs or shows symptoms before coverage is effective is considered pre-existing and is not eligible for coverage. Get a quote to learn more about waiting periods in your state.

Which vets can I use?

With a Spot plan you can take your pet to any vet in the U.S. or Canada, including specialists and emergency clinics. Spot plans do not use networks, giving pet parents the freedom to select the best clinic for their pet. Spot offers comprehensive coverage options for unexpected accidents and illnesses. You can also add-on Platinum preventive for coverage on eligible spaying or neutering costs

Preventive Care

Coverage for our optional preventive care add-ons begins just 24 hours after purchase, allowing you to use your preventive benefits almost immediately. These add-ons help cover routine check-ups, dental cleanings, and vaccinations, helping your pet get essential care. Spot's approach prioritizes immediate access to care, reflecting our commitment to your pet's well-being.

Submitting claims is easy

Once you visit your vet, submit a claim via our app or through the member center. Make sure you include any necessary documentation. Most claims are processed in less than 3 days, and reimbursements will be paid either via direct deposit or a check, whichever you prefer. Our helpful customer service representatives are available to answer any questions you may have.

Pet Insurance FAQs

Have questions about pet insurance and how it works? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

How are my pet insurance premiums calculated?

In general, your monthly premium is based on your pet’s age, breed, and your location, as well as your plan configuration. Spot allows pet parents to choose a deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit from a variety of options, each which play into the cost of your monthly premium. Opting into a preventive care add-on or eligibility for a discount can also affect the price of your premium.

What is a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is any injury or illness that occurs or begins to show symptoms before your pet’s coverage starts or during the policy’s waiting period. A condition can be considered pre-existing whether or not it has been diagnosed or treated by a vet; all that matters is when it occurred or first began to show symptoms.

Spot plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. However, an injury or illness that is curable, cured, and free of any treatment or symptoms for 180 days, will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament injuries. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during the waiting period, future ones will not be covered. Learn more about what pet insurance does not cover here.

Can I get reimbursed for routine teeth cleanings?

Spot does not cover routine teeth cleanings under our base plans. However, if you choose to purchase an optional preventive care add-on with your base plan, you can get cash back for your pet’s routine teeth cleanings.

What is the best age to insure my pet?

Spot plans don’t have upper age limits for new enrollments or coverage. We advise all pet parents to enroll their pets as soon as they are eligible, at 8 weeks old. This lowers the change that your pet may develop a “pre-existing condition” which will then not be eligible for coverage once they are insured.

Does pet insurance cover exam fees?

While not all pet insurance providers will cover exam fees, Spot plans cover exam fees for covered conditions.

Routine wellness exams are not covered under Spot’s accident-only or accident & illness base plans but are covered under Spot’s preventive care add-ons, which can be purchased for a small monthly fee.

We lead the pack.
