What To Consider When Looking At Pet Insurance Options?

Choosing pet insurance involves comparing key factors including policies, coverage differences, claim eligibility, and reimbursement rates. Understanding these factors is crucial when determining the coverage and cost-effectiveness of your pet's health care, as these differences can greatly influence the coverage of your claims and the reimbursement amount after veterinary visits. When looking at pet insurance, consider the following:

1

Coverage

Spot offers two main plans: Accident & Illness coverage, addressing a broad range of health concerns, and the Accident Only plan, catering specifically to unexpected injuries. Spot also offers optional preventive care plans with coverage available for routine exams, dental cleanings, and spaying or neutering.
2

Deductibles

Spot's insurance plans incorporate a deductible, a predetermined amount that must be paid before coverage applies to eligible veterinary expenses. As a policyholder you retain the ability to select the deductible amount, tailoring the plan to align with your preferences and financial considerations.
3

Reimbursement

Spot offers reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, or 90% on eligible vet bills. You’ll need to meet your deductible first before reimbursements are paid out. Allowing you to choose the reimbursement amount, gives you the added flexibility to customize your plan to best fit your pet health and budget needs.
4

Pre-existing Conditions

We don't cover pre-existing conditions, and typically, neither does anyone else. However, unlike some other pet insurance providers, Spot plans can cover curable, pre-existing conditions, as long as they are treatment and symptom free for at least 180 days, excluding pre-existing knee and ligament conditions.

Pet Insurance FAQs

Have questions about pet insurance and how it works? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

What determines the cost of my pet insurance premium?

There are multiple factors that can affect the cost of a pet insurance premium including the age and breed of your pet, your location, and your plan configuration. Spot’s accident-only and accident and illness base plans can be customized by selecting a deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit from a variety of options, each which help configure the cost of your monthly premium. Selection of an optional preventive care add-on or eligibility for a multipet discount can also affect the cost of your premium.

At what age should I insure my pet?

Spot does not have an upper age limit for new enrollments and your pet will never age out of our coverage. Our best advice is that pet parents enroll their pets while they are still young, before they have the change the develop a “pre-existing condition” before they’re insured. Spot can cover kittens and puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

What is a pre-existing condition in pet insurance?

A pre-existing condition is any injury or illness that occurred or began to display symptoms either before the coverage effective date of your pet’s policy or during the policy waiting period. A condition can be considered pre-existing even if it has not been diagnosed or treated by a vet, the only factor that matters is when the condition occurred or when your pet began to experience symptoms.

While Spot plans will not cover pre-existing conditions, an injury or illness that is curable, cured, and without treatment or symptoms for a period of 180 days, is no longer considered pre-existing. The exception to this is knee and ligament injuries. If a knee or ligament injury takes place before the coverage effective date of your pet’s policy, or during the policy’s waiting period, future ones will not be eligible for coverage.

Can I be reimbursed for my pet’s routine teeth cleanings?

While Spot does not cover routine teeth cleanings under our accident-only or accident and illness base plans, pet parents who opt into an optional preventive care add-on can be reimbursed for this service.

Are exam fees covered by pet insurance?

Spot’s accident-only and accident & illness plans will cover exam fees for covered conditions. While routine wellness exams are not covered under these plans, pet parents can get cash back on wellness exams by opting into an optional preventive care add-on. These can be added to your base plan for a small fee.
