1. Trupanion plans don't cover exam fees for covered conditions. Spot plans do.
Trupanion plans don’t cover exam fees for covered conditions.
With pet insurance plans provided by Spot, you can get coverage for exam fees for covered conditions.
2. Trupanion plans have per-condition deductibles vs. Spot plan's annual deductibles
With a Trupanion policy, you must meet your deductible each time your pet is diagnosed with a new condition.
Spot plans have an annual deductible. After you meet your selected deductible amount for the policy year, you will be reimbursed for eligible expenses for the rest of the policy year.
3. Trupanion plans have a 30-day waiting period for illnesses; Spot plans have a waiting period of 14 days for illnesses.
Trupanion plans' illness coverage waiting period is 30 days. Any condition that your pet develops or is diagnosed with during that 30-day waiting period is considered a pre-existing condition and not eligible for coverage.
On the contrary, Spot accident & illness plans' waiting period is 14 days. There is no waiting period for the add-on Preventive Care coverage options that Spot offers for an additional cost.
4. Trupanion plans don't offer a multi-pet discount. Spot plans do.
Do you have multiple pets? Ask many pet owners. They’ll share that one furry friend simply isn’t enough!
If you add a second, third, fourth, etc., pet to your plan, you will need to pay the full premium price for each of them with Trupanion policies. This goes for Trupanion dog insurance plans as well as Trupanion cat insurance plans.
With Spot plans, all additional pets after the first get a 10 percent multi-pet discount.
5. Trupanion plans don't offer preventive care coverage options or accident-only coverage plans.
Trupanion offers an Accident & Illness plan with the optional add-on of "Recovery and Complementary Care" to provide coverage for alternative wellness treatments. Trupanion will not cover conditions that are considered preventable, but there are no options for Preventive Care coverage with Trupanion. Trupanion also does not offer Accident-Only plans.
This is not the case with Spot. In addition to offering Accident and Illness coverage plans, Spot has an Accident-Only coverage plan option that is a good choice for those looking for a lower-cost premium option to cover only injuries.
Spot also has Preventive Care coverage options that you can add to your plan for an additional cost. Preventive coverage provides you with a set annual amount of coverage for routine care like vaccinations and teeth cleanings.
Help with stressful vet bills
Spot plans include coverage for acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic treatments that are prescribed to treat covered conditions. They also cover behavioral problems, and they don’t have upper age limits for older pets.

Spot pet insurance is fabulous!
Submitting the claim for our dog's annual vet visit was super easy on the app! We got our reimbursement within a couple of working/business days. Will continue to encourage people with pets to use Spot pet insurance every chance I get! Thank you Spot!
Spot Insurance is very affordable
Spot Insurance is very affordable! I like that they fully reimbursed me for Charlie's physical exam and vaccine. I also like that the claim forms are short to complete and quickly processed.
SPOT is easy to work and always…
SPOT is easy to work with and always helpful when I call with questions. Their processing is quick and provide good communication on claims or requests for an estimate. This is the first time having insurance on my older puppers and am very happy to have SPOT coverage.
Very happy with claim process & reimbursement
I’m always nervous about whether an insurance company will actually reimburse, and when we moved and had a stressful time, with one of my dogs having pancreatitis, then a month later she got out and got an infection in her leg from a scuffle with another animal, and also had a vet recommended prescription food and a specific probiotic powder for her suspected allergies/licking that worsened after antibiotics, Spot processed the claims within a few days and paid them as expected! They covered everything (after deductible) at 70% as that was the coverage level I had chosen, with the exception of a few small unrelated/not covered fees. Total reimbursement was about $1,000. I opted for checks for the claims which took a bit longer to arrive, but they have an option for direct deposit so I may set that up in the future. I had a higher deductible set ($1,000) which I have now lowered for this upcoming annual renewal, now that I know that the claims process goes well! Since pet insurance companies don’t generally cover pre-existing conditions, definitely consider getting coverage early/ASAP for your dogs. It is a huge help with high, unexpected expenses.
