Cat Insurance FAQs

How Much is Cat Insurance?

Our cat insurance plans start at $9, but according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, on average, cat parents pay between $9 and $32 per month1.

What Factors Affect the Cost of Pet Insurance?

Your pet’s age, breed, and your location all play a role in the cost of their plan. The cost of your plan also depends on the base plan, deductible, annual limit, and reimbursement rate you select when enrolling your pet.

Is There a Discount on Pet Insurance for Multiple Pets?

Yes! As pet parents ourselves, we understand that the cost of care for multiple pets can quickly add up. With our multi-pet discount, pet parents automatically get 10% off the monthly premium for each pet enrolled after the first.

Is Cat insurance Worth It?

Every 6 seconds, a pet parent is faced with a vet bill of $1,000 or more2, but 2 in 3 pet parents say that they could not afford a vet bill of $1,000 or less if their pet needed lifesaving treatment3.

Spot plans help provide pet parents with financial support so that when it matters most, they can focus on their pet’s care, not the cost, helping bring peace of mind during difficult moments.

What Kind of Insurance Do I Need for My Cat?

While Spot offers both accident-only and accident-and-illness plans, we highly recommend enrolling your cat in our most comprehensive plan, a combination of an accident-and-illness plan and a preventative care add-on. Under this combination, your pet plan coverage can include hospitalization, prescription medication, hereditary conditions, cancer, certain vaccines, wellness exams, and much more!

In Which States Can I Use My Met Insurance Plan?

Our coverage applies in all 50 states (and Canada)!

Do Indoor Cats Need Pet Insurance?

While indoor cats may be at a lower risk for certain health conditions, they can still fall sick or become injured. This is why we recommend enrolling your cat in a pet insurance plan regardless of whether they spend most of their time inside or outside.

Spot understands that every pet’s needs are different; so we offer plans with customizable coverage, allowing pet parents to build the plan that best fits the needs of their pet and their budget.

Can I Get Insurance for an Older Cat?

Spot plans have no upper limit on the age for your pets to be eligible for coverage. Usually, the older the pet is, the higher the risk of them developing an illness or injury, so Spot recommends you get pet insurance for your pet early on.

Does Cat Insurance Cover Food?

While non-medical supplies such as your cat’s food typically aren't covered under pet insurance, prescription foods prescribed by your veterinarian to manage a covered condition can be eligible for reimbursement.

Does Cat Insurance Cover Medication?

Yes! Our plans can reimburse the cost of medications and food prescribed to treat covered conditions, including cancer, diabetes, allergies, thyroid conditions, and more. To learn more about what our plans cover, view a sample policy.

Does Cat insurance Cover Pre-existing Conditions?

Pet insurance cannot cover pre-existing conditions, but with a Spot plan, cured and curable conditions can be covered if cured and symptom-free for 180 days. This does not include knee and ligament injuries.
