What is Pet Insurance for Dogs and Cats?

Pet insurance helps pay for eligible veterinary treatment costs of a pet’s unexpected accident or illness. In return for a premium, pet insurance helps you sleep peacefully at night.

We know that pets are good for our physical as well as mental well-being. We wouldn’t want anything unfortunate to affect their health, but if it happens, we ought to be prepared financially to help get them the best care. Know more about what does pet insurance cover and how to choose the best pet insurance.

Canine distemper, hip dysplasia, heartworms, leptospirosis, external parasites, etc. for dogs and roundworms, rabies, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, cryptosporidiosis, and giardiasis, etc. for cats are a few examples of diseases that can affect our dogs and cats. And if these are not enough, there is a chance for them to get injured or have an unexpected accident. This is where pet insurance can help!

Why is pet insurance important in Wyoming?

Canine Upper Respiratory Disease

Canine infectious respiratory disease complex, which is commonly known as CIRDC or kennel cough, is a syndrome caused by bacterial and viral pathogens. It is basically an acute onset of contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Foaming at the mouth, weight loss and loss of interest in food, fatigue or listlessness, fever, coughing, gagging or retching can indicate the onset of this disease. Wyoming is witnessing an outbreak of this disease. This becomes riskier in more crowded areas and breeding grounds as it is highly contagious.

Patellar Luxation

Patellar luxation is a common condition in dogs which is seen when a dog's kneecap becomes dislocated. When the kneecap slips out of a groove that holds it in place in the thigh bone, it can create many problems for the joints of your dog. Pain, swelling, and lameness are some of the initial symptoms of it. It may even make it impossible for your dog to bend his or her leg. The condition is usually said to be genetic in nature and miniature and teacup breeds are more likely to inherit the genetic defect that causes the problem. It is recommended that you visit the vet as soon as you see any symptoms as surgery may be needed to treat it.

Coyotes

Coyotes are a known presence in the state of Wyoming, and these wild animals can pose a big threat to our pets. When Coyotes venture into residential areas in search of food, our pets are at risk of an encounter especially if left outside unsupervised. Pet owners in this state are advised to keep their dogs on leashes and to be on alert while our pets are playing outside. It’s best to keep food indoors and to not leave garbage outdoors to help prevent Coyote encounters with our pets. Aside from attacks, Coyotes may carry diseases and parasites like rabies, distemper, fleas, worms, and ticks that can be transmitted to our pets. It is advised to keep your pet up to date on all recommended vaccines to help prevent these diseases from transmitting to your pet.

Pet Insurance FAQs

Have questions about pet insurance and how it works? Let’s dig up an answer.

Do Plans Provided by Spot Have a Money-back Guarantee?

Plans provided by Spot offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so feel free to take a look and see what a SPOT plan can do for you and your pet. If, within the first 30 days of your policy you wish to cancel, you can get a full refund of the premium amount.  The 30-day money-back guarantee is available if no claims have been covered.  It’s not available in NY or ME.

Are pre-existing conditions covered by pet insurance?

Plans provided by Spot do not cover pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any injury or illness which occurs or shows symptoms before coverage starts or during a waiting period. A condition is considered pre-existing whether or not it’s been officially diagnosed or treated; all that matters is when it occurred or symptoms first displayed.

However, with plans provided by Spot, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future if the condition is curable. An injury or illness that is curable, cured, and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.

Will kennel cough go away on its own?

In around 3 weeks, the cough may goes away on its own. But if it doesn’t, you need immediate treatment as there are chances it could develop into pneumonia.

Do Spot plans have annual limits?

With some other providers, you will find plans with annual or per incident limits of $10,000 - $20,000. Plans provided by Spot have customizable plan options with an annual limit option if you choose.

Should I walk my dog with Patellar Luxation?

The exercise and training should be limited if any symptoms of luxating patella are seen. However, walks are an important part of their physical and mental well-being. We advise you to contact your vet for more information.

Are vaccinations covered by pet insurance?

Most pet insurance providers do not cover the cost of vaccinations in their base plans. Spot offers two preventive care coverage options that you can add to your plan for an extra cost, where you will be eligible for reimbursement on vaccines like rabies and Lyme disease.
