DINKWADs: The Rise of Double-Income Pet Parents and What It Means for Pet Insurance

Fact Checked

There is no secret: double income and no kids is one of the fastest-growing lifestyles in the United States. It makes a lot of sense: double income and no kids give couples a higher degree of financial freedom and is reportedly popular among millennials and Gen Z. However, the classic model of being a “DINK” (double income no kids) is now going through some changes thanks to the introduction of “DINKWADS” (double income and no kids with a dog).

What is a DINKWAD?

As mentioned above, a “DINKWAD” is someone who earns a double income with their partner and chooses to adopt a dog instead of raising children. The main difference between DINKWADs and other pet owners is that DINKWADs truly adopt the role of “pet parents.”

What Makes a Pet Parent Different from A Pet Owner?

Put simply, a pet parent is someone who goes the extra mile for their pets. Unlike traditional pet owners, many DINKWADs treat their pets like their  "fur babies"—investing in premium pet food, stylish accessories, and even pet-friendly vacations.

This lifestyle isn’t just about spoiling pets—it also comes with a sense of responsibility. Just like parents prepare for their children's future, DINKWADs are increasingly prioritizing their pets’ healthcare, including pet insurance.

How Does Pet Insurance Fit Into a DINKWAD Lifestyle

As mentioned above, DINKWADs tend to be more dedicated to the life and happiness of their dogs. Pet insurance can help them manage the costs associated with vet care - which could be quite high depending on the issue that they are getting checked for. Pet insurance fits into this lifestyle because of the amount of care that pet owners direct towards their pets.

Is the DINKWAD Lifestyle Here to Stay?

As younger generations redefine family dynamics, the DINKWAD trend isn’t just a passing phase—it’s a reflection of changing priorities. As long as the younger generations continue to value pets - DINKWADs will still exist. Whether this be through a restructuring of the conventional family or a love of pets that is shared with a loved one remains to be seen.
