What Are The Dog Breeds with Blue Eyes?

Fact Checked

Which blue eyes caught your eyes that you are now looking for dogs with blue eyes as well? Zac Efron? Julia Roberts? Angelina Jolie? Or was it Paul Newman? Whichever blue eyes caught your attention, the dogs we are about to list will blow your mind and get you almost hypnotized with their starry blue eyes.

Blue-eyed dogs are like the supermodels of the canine world. And they know exactly how to use them to their advantage. They are like a four-legged tail-wagging Jedi who can mind-trick you into doing their bidding. And once you stare into those eyes, you won’t even think twice before signing all your property in their names. Okay, that’s too far but you got the feeling right?

Here are some beautiful dog breeds with stunning blue eyes – (1)

Siberian Husky

The list had to start with them. These stunning creatures have icy-blue eyes that reflect the snowy terrains they belong to. They can also have brown eyes or a combination of both colors.

Australian Shepherd

While all Aussies may not have blue eyes, the ones with a merle coat stand to have a higher chance of getting them. Even here you’ll find a combination of brown and blue eyes.

Border Collie

The smartest dog breed on the planet has more to offer. They can have eyes with shades of brown, gold or blue. Merle ones again stand a higher chance of getting blue eyes.

Dachshund

These sausage dogs can have multiple variations of eye colors with blue in it – full blue, one blue-one brown, or a combination of both in one eye.

Great Dane

There’s another reason for getting stunned at these dogs apart from their huge size – their blue eyes. Most of these puppies are born with blue eyes. However, they may change to brown as they grow. The ones with dapple and merle coats retain the blue eyes for their whole life though.

Alaskan Klee Kai

The companion version of the similar-looking and hard-working Siberian Husky. Alaskan Klee Kais can have icy blue, brown, hazel, or even green eyes.

Pit Bull

A general term that includes the American Staffordshire terrier and the American pit bull terrier – Pit Bulls are also born with blue eyes that change color at maturity for most of them.

Other breeds that flaunt their blue eyes include –

  • Alaskan Malamute

  • Old English Sheepdog

  • English Bulldog

  • Dalmation

  • Cardigan Welsh Corgi

  • Weimaraner

Is It Rare for a Dog to Have Blue Eyes?

For this, you’ll have to understand where blue eyes come from. And these are the reasons they happen –

  • Merle gene

The gene that causes the swirly coat pattern can also affect the skin and eye color. This is basically a genetic factor.

  • Lack of Pigmentation

The colors in various parts of the dog’s body including skin, hair and eyes are determined by the presence of the pigment, melanin. Funnily, blue eyes occur when this pigment is not present in the iris. Brown eyes, on the other hand, are a result of a high concentration of melanin.

  • Genetic mutation

Blue eyes can also be caused by genetic mutation in some dogs. In Siberian Huskies, for example, the gene that causes the blue eyes has nothing to do with the coat color and is specific to them.

  • Piebald Gene

The gene responsible for white patches in certain breeds can also cause the eyes to appear blue along with a fully pink nose and pink eye rims.

  • Albinism

Albino dogs lack pigment in their skin, hair, and eyes. This causes their eyes to appear pale and blue colored.

What Are the Health Issues with Dogs with Blue Eyes?

Apart from all the above reasons for dogs to get blue eyes, the reason for the color can also be certain health conditions and diseases. These include – (2)

  • Cataracts

  • Glaucoma

  • Corneal Dystrophy

  • Anterior Uveitis

These conditions can change the composition of a dog’s eyes and give them a cloudy-grey appearance. They may arise from old age, injury or other diseases. And if left untreated, they can cause partial or complete blindness in dogs.

What is the Rarest Dog Eye Color?

What is the rarest dog eye color? You asked for the rarest color, let us give you the entire list of dog-eye colors in order of their rarity – the last one being the rarest of all. (3)

  • Brown – the most common one out there

  • Amber – Like a golden honey shade

  • Blue – What we just read everything about

  • Hazel – Mostly found in dogs that can also have blue eyes

  • Green – The rarest of all and most found in Pit Bulls.

While the next two are not solid eye colors in dogs, their rarity in appearance makes them top this list.
