If there is one thing that is a nightmare for dog owners, it is their dogs getting lost and not being able to find them. Thanks to microchips, pets can be permanently identified without having to worry about the tracking falling off like a normal collar would. The peace of mind that microchips can give pet owners is nice, but how much does it cost? Spot Pet Insurance explores more below.
What Exactly is a Microchip for Dogs?
A microchip is a small device inserted under a dog’s skin. This is not to be confused with a GPS device, which does not show your pet’s location. Instead, each chip has a unique code linked to the pet owner’s contact information. The amount of information that could be stored in a microchip can be much more extensive than with a regular collar.
How Much Does Microchipping Cost?
According to internal claims data, the average cost for a microchip registration and monitoring during an annual wellness exam is $105.50†. However, pet insurance could reimburse eligible vet expenses related to microchip registration and monitoring.
How Does the Procedure Work?
The microchip is implanted under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades, which is an area that is less sensitive than other parts of the body. The entire procedure is not lengthy and there is no anesthesia required. The fact that the procedure is relatively short and no anesthesia is required contributes to the relatively low cost.
Is Microchipping a Dog Worth It?
Yes, microchipping a dog can be worth it when you take into consideration the higher probability of a lost dog being returned to their owners. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, “ a study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters in 23 states showed that microchipped animals are far more likely to be returned to their owners.1”
Microchips can help provide an extra level of protection in case your dog’s collar or tag fall off. Microchips also can last around 25 years.
Is There a Minimum Age to Microchip a Dog?
Dogs can be chipped at any age, but it is typically recommended to wait until puppies are at least 8 weeks old before being microchipped2. Like any other procedure, the dog should be in good physical condition before getting microchipped.
Does Pet Insurance Cover Microchipping?
Yes, pet insurance can cover eligible vet expenses related to microchipping. Spot plans help cover microchip implantation in all plans, Accident-Only or Accident & Illness.
