Pet care has always evolved alongside technology and medicine, from prescription diets to wearable trackers. But new frontiers—artificial intelligence, genetic cloning, and life-extension therapies—are pushing that evolution somewhere new: from managing a pet’s daily routine to potentially rewriting the rules of its life span.
According to a recent survey, Modern Pet Parenthood Report, commissioned by Spot Pet Insurance, of more than 3,600 U.S. dog and cat parents ages 18–64, many pet parents are weighing emerging technologies like AI, cloning, and life-extension therapies against their comfort level in caring for their pets.
New survey data from 3,600 respondents suggests pet parents are willing to experiment with some of these advances, but far from all of them. Enthusiasm drops off sharply the further a technology strays from everyday care and into more permanent, unprecedented territory.
The results offer a clear picture of where modern pet care is headed—and where most pet parents are drawing the line.
AI Is Creeping Into Pet Care, But Slowly
Artificial intelligence has found its way into everything from meal planning to medical research, and pet care is no exception.
When respondents were asked whether they’ve used an AI tool, like ChatGPT or a specialized app, to help manage their pet’s daily lifestyle—things like building custom meal plans, decoding unusual behaviors, or creating enrichment activities—67% said no, they stick to traditional advice from trainers, vets, and personal research. Only 10% said they regularly rely on AI, while another 23% have tried it out of curiosity without making it a habit.
For now, pet care remains a largely human-guided space. AI may be reshaping plenty of everyday decisions, but most pet parents aren’t ready to hand daily pet management over to a chatbot.
Most Pet Parents Wouldn’t Rule Out Extending a Pet’s Life
Some technologies aren’t about daily convenience—they’re about time itself.
Respondents were asked whether they’d sign up for a scientifically backed daily therapy that could safely extend their pet’s life span by three to five years, in exchange for a recurring monthly cost. 59% wouldn’t rule it out: 27% called it a priority expense worth budgeting for outright, while another 32% said it would depend on the overall monthly cost. Only 41% said they don’t believe in altering an animal’s natural life span at all.
The findings suggest that, for a majority of pet parents, more time with a pet is worth serious financial consideration—even if the final decision comes down to price.
Cloning Is Where Pet Parents Draw the Line
If there’s a hard boundary in modern pet care, this is it.
When asked whether they’d preserve their pet’s DNA for the option of genetic cloning—a hypothetical service priced at $500 to $1,000—85% of respondents said no. 44% said cloning simply feels wrong, while another 41% believe every pet is unique and can’t be replaced. Just 15% said they’d do it in a heartbeat.
Unlike AI tools or life-extension therapy, cloning isn’t framed as an upgrade to an existing pet’s life—it’s an attempt to replace it. That distinction appears to matter enormously to pet parents, even those otherwise open to emerging pet care technology.
Even Basic Care Has Its Gaps
Before getting to the future of pet care, it’s worth checking in on the present.
Respondents were asked, honestly, who’s more up to date on health checkups right now: themselves or their pet. 56% said both of them are current, but 20% admitted their pet actually sees the vet more regularly than they see their own doctor. Another 13% said they’re the one who’s current while their pet is overdue, and 11% said neither of them is caught up.
It’s a reminder that even as pet care edges toward AI-assisted routines and cloning debates, the basics—like remembering to schedule a checkup—can still be the hardest part to keep up with, for pets and pet parents alike.
The Future of Pet Care Has Limits
Taken together, the survey results sketch out a pet care landscape that’s evolving unevenly.
Pet parents are cautiously experimenting with AI, seriously weighing the cost of extending a pet’s life, and firmly rejecting cloning as a step too far. Meanwhile, plenty are still catching up on the fundamentals of basic pet health care.
The appetite for new pet care technology isn’t unlimited, and it isn’t uniform. For most pet parents, some innovations are worth exploring, some are worth paying for, and some simply aren’t up for consideration at any price.
