They Think We’re Pretty Cool:
What is Pet Insurance for Dogs and Cats?
Pet insurance is a way to help cover the cost of eligible vet bills from unexpected accidents and illnesses that may happen to our pets in return for a premium. It is similar to the insurance we get for ourselves and our families.
Air, food, water, injuries, etc., can all become avenues for the pets to fall sick or get hurt. Some risks include canine distemper, influenza, heartworms, leptospirosis, external parasites, etc. for dogs, roundworms, rabies, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, etc. for cats. We would want to get the best possible care out there for our pets, but the vet bills can show big numbers at times. This is where pet insurance could help. Why We Recommend Pet Insurance in Rhode Island?
Heartworms
Each year thousands of dogs in the United States become infected with heartworms. Caused by Dirofilaria immitis, which is commonly referred to as heartworm, is a major parasitic threat for dogs and cats around the world and Rhode Island is not safe from it. Mosquitoes are the major carriers of this disease. These worms live inside the heart and lungs of the infected dog and make it difficult for the heart to pump blood by clogging the vessels around the heart. The symptoms of it can include lethargy, weight loss, difficulty breathing, bulging ribs, and persistent cough. If not treated early, it could lead to heart failure.

Coyotes
Rhode Island is home to over 800 species of wildlife, with the Coyote among the most common. Attacks to our pets are not uncommon in this state, and pet owners are advised to keep cats and dogs inside at night as these are typically when attacks happen. Some ways to help prevent these wild cats from attacking our pets are by keeping dogs on leashes while outside, enclosing your yard with coyote-proof fencing (6 ft high and 2 ft underground), keeping your yard well-lit at nighttime, storing pet food indoors, and supervising your pet at all times while they’re outside. Although rare, some coyotes can carry rabies which poses a major threat to our pets too.

What if my pet has a pre-existing condition? Can I still get coverage?
Pet insurance generally does not cover pre-existing conditions. This means that if your pet has a pre-existing condition, it will not be included in your coverage. Spot Pet Insurance plans follow this standard policy, so pre-existing conditions are not covered under their plans. However, conditions that are cured and curable after 180 days of a condition being symptom free and treatment free, a condition is no longer considered pre-existing. This does not apply to knee and ligament emergencies.
Can you get pet insurance after a diagnosis?
Although you can obtain pet insurance following a diagnosis, coverage for vet bills related to that diagnosis won’t be available, as it will be considered a pre-existing condition.
