The pint-sized fluff balls with hearts of lions – Pomeranians are adorable, dramatic, cuddly and bossy (sometimes all at the same time). While you may think that their fluff would act like a protective layer against injuries and infections, sadly, they are prone to a few mishaps and health hiccups during their lifetime.

Before we get into the cost of pet insurance for Pomeranians, here are some very interesting facts about Pomeranians or Pom-Poms as they are fondly called since you’re a proud owner of one or are about to be one – (1)

  • The name comes from a region in Northern Europe, Pomerania.

  • The puff is for a reason. Pomeranians came from larger dogs that pulled sleds in the Arctic. So, the puff is more like a puffer jacket for them.

  • It’s Queen Victoria who bred them to be smaller. They were actually bigger in size before she fell in love with them.

  • They are iconic. Out of the three dogs that made it alive on the Titanic, 2 were Pomeranians. Mozart also had a Pom called Pimperl, and they say that a Pom watched Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel.

  • Poms are Guinness World Record holders! One holds the record for running 10 meters on hind legs at 6.56 seconds, and another for the fastest 5-meter run on front legs at 7.76 seconds.

Personality-wise, they are very interesting creatures. They are chatty, smiley and very much adaptable. They seem like the perfect dogs, don’t they?

They are. However, Pom-Poms are prone to certain medical conditions during their lifetime. These include – (2)

  • Collapsed Trachea – This is usually an inherited condition that is caused by pressure on the windpipe.

  • Hypoglycaemia – This is caused by a sudden drop in sugar levels which causes symptoms like shaking, twitching muscles, and seizures.

  • Black Skin Disease – Also known as Alopecia, it is a condition where a Pom loses all its fur. It is probably caused because of hormonal imbalances allergies, obesity, and other genetic factors.

  • Patella Luxation – This is when the patella or the kneecap doesn’t develop properly and dislocates over time. This is probably because of their bow-shaped legs.

Apart from these, Pomeranians can also be prone to conditions like cataracts, elbow dysplasia, eye problems, etc. It’s not like every one of these dogs will go through these conditions. Just that, they have a higher chance of affecting a Pomeranian.

It is important for you to know this because the cost of insurance is calculated using the likelihood of the breed falling prey to medical conditions among other factors. Having said that, let’s move to the question you came looking for the answer to -

How Much is the Average Monthly Premium for Pomeranians?

The average monthly premium for Pomeranians is $50.55. This is a fairly typical price to pay per month for pet insurance, as it lies in the middle of the spectrum of the insurance costs for dog breeds.

How Many Claims Did Pomeranian Owners Make?

Pomeranian owners made 8222* claims with us in 2024. Given the popularity of Pom-Poms in the US, this number seems quite low. This can be good news for you if you’re an owner (or about to be one) because it can mean that Pomeranians are generally healthy dogs.

Having said that, you may ask if it  makes sense to get insurance for your Pomeranian. We would say yes. You see, the numbers here may make you feel that it can be avoided and if your Pom falls sick at times, your wallet will take care of it. It’s just that you don’t know when that will happen and how severe will that be.

Certain medical conditions take a long time to treat and recover and involve extensive treatment including surgery, alternate therapies, medications, prescription diets, etc. The total cost may very easily go into the 4-digit thousands.

We are not saying that you will need your dog to fall sick severely to make the insurance feel worth it. However, your bank account will thank you if you have one at such a time. Otherwise, insurance is a tool you would pray to never claim for you would always want your pup in a healthy condition.
