Although “bigger isn’t always better” and “good things come in small packages,” with dogs we believe this isn’t the case! Breeds like Great Danes and Bernese Mountain Dogs can be intimidating due to their giant size but are often even more affectionate and loyal than smaller pets.
Spot Pet Insurance wants all pets and owners to enjoy happy and healthy lives together. Before adopting one of these gentle giants, make sure you have the correct conditioners to care for them. Due to their size, it is important to have sufficient room for these loving giants to live comfortably in. Large breeds often need more exercise than smaller dogs. They, therefore, need space to play in. If you have a large yard, they could be perfect for you and your family. Big dogs also tend to be more expensive to care for. It is important to be prepared for that aspect of your new pooch as well.
Great Dane
Great Danes have historically held the record for the largest dog breeds in the world, holding the Guinness World Record from 2010 to 2013, 2016, and 2021 they are formally recognized by the American Kennel Club as the largest dog breed. These beloved giants can reach almost three feet tall at their shoulders when standing on all fours and are taller than the majority of human adults when they stand on their hind legs! In fact, the tallest dog to date was a Great Dane named Zeus who stood at a whopping 44 inches tall. In comparison to their massive heights, Great Danes are not extremely heavy, weighing between 110 and 175 pounds. Despite their huge size, Great Danes are friendly, healthy, loyal and make exceptional companions for their owners.
Irish Wolfhound
Irish Wolfhounds tend to be a close second to Great Danes in the World Record books. Originally bred to hunt down wolves, these dogs are extremely intelligent and are usually very high-energy. They are also known to be easygoing and wonderful with children. Although Great Danes are generally larger in size, Irish Wolfhounds are known to be taller, standing around 35 inches tall on average – equivalent to the height of a donkey!
Saint Bernard
Bred to be a rescue dog in the Swiss Alps, Saint Bernards are now one of the best breed choices for a family home. They are extremely kind, docile and still commonly used as search and rescue assistants across the world. Saint Bernards typically stand at a maximum of 30 inches but can weigh up to a massive 180 pounds! Their hearts are just as big as their bodies; they are known to be extremely eager to love and please their human pals.
Bernese Mountain Dog
Thriving in colder climates, Bernese Mountain Dogs are yet another gentle giant who are not only affectionate toward their families but also great with other dogs. They grow about 23-29 inches tall and were originally bred to handle farm work in Switzerland – hence their shaggy coats. Bernese Mountain Dogs are ideal for families with young children and their beautiful tri-colored coats are bound to capture hearts.
Neapolitan Mastiff
Neapolitan Mastiffs are one of many mastiff breeds and originate from ancient Italy. Guard dogs by nature, these stocky canines are known for being extremely protective and brave on behalf of their loved ones. However, Neapolitan Mastiffs are unique in the sense that they tend to be quite quiet and sneak up on threats rather than barking at them. This protective personality requires dog owners who are willing to put in extra effort when it comes to their training. Don’t be alarmed, these pups are kind-hearted and affectionate after you gain their trust.
English Mastiff
Yet another type of mastiff, English Mastiffs are just as large as their Neapolitan relatives. They are known for their sweet personalities and their humongous size – with males weighing up to 230 pounds! English Mastiffs’ ancestors were commonly used in war; these pups are still frequently used for police, security and military purposes. However, they also make great family furry friends and will never turn down a cuddle.
Newfoundland
Newfoundlands are well known for their love of all things water-related, and even have slightly webbed paws that enable them to be such good swimmers! Originating in Canada, these canines were once commonly found as helpers on fishing boats. They are very intelligent, and their brains and swimming abilities combined make them great lifeguards. Newfoundlands are incredibly cute, with thick fluffy coats. If you’re looking for a dog that can be confused as a bear these are the pups for you!
Leonberger
Another super fluffy breed, Leonbergers were originally bred to be members of the royal families. They are a cross of Saint Bernards and Newfoundlands. In addition, they are extremely talented at herding and tracking. Their regal appearance is paired with a just as impressive personality. They are known to be playful, friendly and will definitely not hold it against you if you don’t live in a castle! It is important to note Leonbergers can be more difficult to train than other pups. If you’re looking to adopt them, be sure to prepare for more time dedicated to obedience lessons.
